Dr. Sheehan and our hygienists are using the VELscope oral assessment system, which allows us to identify cancerous or precancerous growths that may not be apparent to the naked eye. The VELscope is one of the cutting-edge tools we use to stay on the leading edge and deliver the best available care to our patients.
The screening is completed in just one or two minutes during a routine examination. The VELscope’s exam, which is free and painless, emits a blue light that affects molecules deep within the layers of oral mucosal tissues, which in turn emit a light in shades green, yellow and red, allowing the staff to see any possible warning signs and detect a problem early.
Many oral health professionals believe it is vital for anyone over the age of 18 to have an oral exam at least once a year. Research has shown a strong link between oral cancer and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Early detection is invaluable to successful treatment, and the VELscope ensures a more thorough exam.
